The idea of sharing news in written form has a fascinating history that traces back to ancient Rome, where daily events and public records were inscribed on stone or metal tablets and displayed for the public. Fast forward to the 21st century, and India now boasts one of the largest newspaper-reading audiences in the world. Newspapers remain a vital source of reliable information and knowledge, accessible across all age groups.
On Indian Newspaper Day, the students at Narayana Schools explored the enduring significance of newspapers, their pivotal role during India’s freedom struggle, and their relevance in today’s digital age. The young Narayanites noted that newspapers are a powerful tool for gaining knowledge and enhancing vocabulary and can also be used as a weapon to deal with an annoying friend.
Our students highlighted how newspapers, from their humble beginnings with Hicky’s Bengal Gazette in 1780, have played a pivotal role in shaping India’s history. They served as powerful tools during the freedom struggle, spreading the ideas of freedom fighters and mobilising the masses. Even today, newspapers continue to evolve, adapting to the challenges and opportunities of the digital age while remaining a trusted source of information and inspiration.
On this special occasion, Ms. Sharani, Director of Narayana Schools, shared her thoughts, saying, “At Narayana Schools, we strive to inculcate the habit of reading newspapers among our students. To support this, every branch receives two newspapers daily. We are proud to see our future generation embracing the importance of newspapers and their role in shaping an informed society.”
The celebration of Indian Newspaper Day at Narayana Schools paid tribute to the rich legacy of newspapers while encouraging students to value their importance even in today’s digital age. Our students reflected on how, despite the growing shift toward digital media, traditional newspapers offer a refreshing break from screens, providing an opportunity to gain knowledge while stepping away from the constant presence of digital devices.
At Narayana Schools, we aim to nurture informed and responsible citizens who not only value India’s rich history but also understand the enduring significance of newspapers in shaping perspectives, seizing opportunities, and building a brighter future.
