Every year on February 21st, countries around the world come together to celebrate International Mother Language Day. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of linguistic diversity and the preservation of mother languages, which are essential for cultural identity and social cohesion.

At Narayana Schools, International Mother Language Day 2024 held significant relevance and was celebrated with great enthusiasm. It provided a unique opportunity for students to learn about different languages, cultures, traditions and taught them the importance of their own mother tongue, as well as languages spoken by their peers.

Teachers engaged students in discussions, presentations, and interactive sessions. Students were informed about some fascinating facts and figures regarding languages worldwide. They learnt that there are approximately 7,000 languages spoken globally, reflecting the rich tapestry of human communication.

Narayanites also delved into the origins of Indian languages, tracing their roots back to ancient civilizations and cultural exchanges over millennia. India, with its diverse linguistic landscape, boasts a total of 22 officially recognized languages. Students were enlightened about the significance of these languages in fostering unity in diversity and preserving India’s cultural heritage. Additionally, they learnt about some of the oldest languages in the world, with Tamil, Sanskrit and Egyptian among the revered ancient languages that continue to enrich human civilization.

Ms. P. Sharani, Director of Narayana Educational Institutions, emphasized the importance of observing such days and educating students about their significance. She said, “International Mother Language Day is not just a day to celebrate linguistic diversity, but also a day to reflect on the role of languages in shaping our identities and connecting us to our roots. By teaching students about the importance of preserving their mother language and respecting others’, we instill in them a sense of pride in their cultural heritage.”

Through these initiatives, Narayana Schools aim to foster a sense of inclusivity and appreciation for linguistic diversity among students. By celebrating World Mother Language Day, the school reaffirms its commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also culturally sensitive and globally aware. Narayana schools are fulfilling dreams of creating well aware and informed citizens of the society, as your dreams are our dreams.
